Why the common fix backfires

Dish soap is built to stay suspended in a sink full of water. In carpet there's nothing to rinse it out, so the soap stays behind and grabs dirt — that's why a cleaned spot goes dark again in a week.

The honest limit

Oil needs a solvent and a rinse. Without extraction, whatever you put on it stays in it.
