Why the common fix backfires

That's exactly what's happening. After the first few passes the bucket is dirt suspended in water and you're painting it back onto the floor. More cleaner makes a stickier film.

A mop has no recovery. Nothing about the technique changes that — the water that goes down mostly stays down.
