Spraying the surface is not treatment

A deodoriser applied to the top of a carpet changes what you smell for a few days. It does not touch the material producing the smell, because that material is under the carpet in the pad.

This distinction is the whole subject. Everything else follows from it.

Step one: find it before quoting it

A blacklight goes on in a darkened room before any number is discussed. Urine residue fluoresces under ultraviolet light, and what appears is a map — how many deposits, how large each one actually is, and where the heavy concentrations sit.

Two things come out of that map.

It shows the real extent, which is almost always wider than the visible surface mark and frequently includes deposits that show nothing at all in daylight.

And it produces an accurate quote. A room with three contaminated areas is not the same job as a whole contaminated room, and pricing it without looking means either overcharging for area that does not need treatment or discovering the real scope halfway through.

Step two: it happens before the room is cleaned

This ordering is not a preference and it matters more than most homeowners realise.

Running water and pressure across an untreated urine deposit spreads it. The contamination moves outward into carpet that was clean, and it wicks back up to the surface as the carpet dries. That is why a spot sometimes reappears a day after a cleaning, larger than it was before.

So the flush happens first. Only after the contaminated areas have been treated does the room get cleaned.

Step three: flood, in volume

The enzyme solution has to reach the depth the urine reached. That means volume, not a spray.

Urine passed through the face fiber, through the backing, into the pad. A treatment that only wets the carpet face is treating a surface that is not where the material is. The area gets flooded with enough solution to physically reach the pad.

This is where low-moisture methods are structurally excluded from the job. Systems designed around using a couple of gallons for an entire house cannot deliver volume into a pad — if they could, the dry-time promise that defines them would be gone. It is not a shortcoming of those methods; it is what they are for.

Step four: draw it back out

Flooding without recovery makes the problem worse. The point is to dilute the deposit and physically remove it, which requires a machine that can pull that volume back out of the padding.

Step five: give the enzymes time

That surface enzyme is why pet treatment is required on every job with animals. Running hot water and high pressure across contaminated carpet without treating it first drives the contamination through the pile instead of removing it, and the room can smell worse afterward than it did before. The honest limits

This is a genuine attempt at the source and it resolves a great many of these problems. It is never sold as a certainty.

Until the floor is opened, nobody knows how far the deposit travelled. A pad that has been repeatedly saturated over years may hold more than can be drawn out of it without removing it.

The complete correction is pulling the carpet, replacing the pad, sealing the subfloor with an odour-blocking primer, and reinstalling. That is construction work.
