Blooming is when a carpet fiber’s twist unravels and the strand opens into a frayed, fuzzy state. It happens when the protector coating holding that twist closed has been abraded away, usually by embedded sand. Once fiber blooms it does not close again — the damage is permanent and no cleaning reverses it.
Graying is permanent color loss caused by fiber damage, not soil. Carpet shows color because light reflects off intact fiber. Once fiber is abraded and bloomed, light scatters instead of reflecting, so the carpet reads dull and gray regardless of how clean it is.
Wicking. The contamination went deeper than the carpet face — into the backing or the pad. As the carpet dries, moisture travels upward and carries the remaining material back to the surface with it. It is not a cleaning failure; it is evidence the source was deeper than one pass could reach.
Filtration soiling. It is not tracked-in dirt — it is airborne particulate pulled through the carpet edge by air moving under doors and along walls, with the carpet acting as the filter. By the time it is visible, the particulate is often embedded in the fiber itself.
An alkaline pre-spray is what releases oily soil from fiber. Alkaline residue left behind is sticky and attracts soil, so the carpet must be rinsed with an acid rinse agent that returns it to roughly neutral pH. Skipping this step is why some carpets resoil within weeks of being cleaned.
Yes, mechanically. Nylon and polyester are thermoplastic, meaning heat can partially restore their original set. Hot water extraction lets crushed and matted pile recoil toward its manufactured state. Cold and low-moisture methods cannot produce this because the mechanism requires heat.
By design, yes — encapsulation crystallises soil into a polymer that is then vacuumed out. That is how the method works. The problem is when follow-up vacuuming is inadequate, which on a one-time residential job it usually is. The crystals remain in the pile as additional hard particulate against the fiber.

Dried urine crystallises. Those crystals release odour whenever humidity rises, which is why a smell you thought was gone comes roaring back on a warm damp day months later. Deodorisers do nothing to crystals — they must be dissolved and physically extracted.
Saturated subfloor swells and holds odour that no topical treatment can reach. At that point the correction is removing carpet and pad, sealing the subfloor with an odour barrier such as Kilz, and starting over. Two-story homes are worse because upstairs is wood subfloor, which absorbs.
