Twelve terms you will hear from a cleaner, or read in a warranty, explained in plain language with the mechanism behind each one. This is thirteen years of field knowledge written down, and almost none of it is published anywhere else.
Fibres, padding
and what they mean.
Fibre identity is the first thing established on any job, because it decides the chemistry, the temperature and the method. The wiki defines each one in plain English.
Straight answers.
Blooming is when a carpet fiber’s twist unravels and the strand opens into a frayed, fuzzy state. It happens when the protector coating holding that twist closed has been abraded away, usually by embedded sand. Once fiber blooms it does not close again — the damage is permanent and no cleaning reverses it.
Because something was left in it. Detergent that is not fully rinsed out stays in the pile as a sticky residue, and that residue grabs soil from every shoe that crosses it. The carpet is not attracting dirt because it is worn — it is attracting dirt because it is tacky. A properly rinsed carpet does not re-soil in a fortnight.
Graying is permanent color loss caused by fiber damage, not soil. Carpet shows color because light reflects off intact fiber. Once fiber is abraded and bloomed, light scatters instead of reflecting, so the carpet reads dull and gray regardless of how clean it is.
Wicking. The contamination went deeper than the carpet face — into the backing or the pad. As the carpet dries, moisture travels upward and carries the remaining material back to the surface with it. It is not a cleaning failure; it is evidence the source was deeper than one pass could reach.
Filtration soiling. It is not tracked-in dirt — it is airborne particulate pulled through the carpet edge by air moving under doors and along walls, with the carpet acting as the filter. By the time it is visible, the particulate is often embedded in the fiber itself.
An alkaline pre-spray is what releases oily soil from fiber. Alkaline residue left behind is sticky and attracts soil, so the carpet must be rinsed with an acid rinse agent that returns it to roughly neutral pH. Skipping this step is why some carpets resoil within weeks of being cleaned.
Yes, mechanically. Nylon and polyester are thermoplastic, meaning heat can partially restore their original set. Hot water extraction lets crushed and matted pile recoil toward its manufactured state. Cold and low-moisture methods cannot produce this because the mechanism requires heat.
By design, yes — encapsulation crystallises soil into a polymer that is then vacuumed out. That is how the method works. The problem is when follow-up vacuuming is inadequate, which on a one-time residential job it usually is. The crystals remain in the pile as additional hard particulate against the fiber.
Yes. Bonnet cleaning spins an absorbent pad across the carpet face under machine weight. On cut pile, weighted friction distorts and fuzzes the fiber — producing in one afternoon the same blooming that normally takes years. Weighted friction against cut pile distorts and fuzzes the fiber.
Sand and grit at the base of the pile act as microscopic blades. Every footstep presses those particles against the fiber and files material off it, including the protector coating. This is the primary mechanism by which carpet wears out — not foot traffic itself.
Most of it drops through the pile and settles at the base, against the backing, where nothing done at the surface reaches it. A carpet can hold several pounds of dry particulate down there and still look acceptable from standing height — and that buried grit is what wears the fibre out.
Because moisture trapped in the padding is where musty odour and mildew begin. Proper extraction pulls most of the water back out in the same pass, leaving carpet damp rather than soaked and drying in four to eight hours. Carpet still wet a day or two later signals weak recovery.
Fluorescent dyes found in some store-bought spotters. They absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible blue-white, so a treated patch looks brighter without any soil having left the fibre. The effect does not rinse out, which leaves a permanently lighter patch that shows worse after a real cleaning.
Organic material in a deposit that soaked through into the padding and sometimes the subfloor. Urine is alkaline when fresh and crystallises as it dries, and those crystals release odour whenever humidity rises — which is why the smell returns on a damp day months later.
Ultraviolet light makes dried urine fluoresce, so a darkened room reveals deposits that are completely invisible in daylight. It turns pet-odour work from guesswork into a map: how many deposits, how large, and where the heavy concentrations are, before any water goes down.
Pressure decides how deep a treatment can reach. Surface cleaning stays on the fibre; reaching contamination in the padding and the subfloor requires enough pressure to drive solution down into those layers. Spiker injects enzyme treatment at around 700 to 800 PSI to saturate the pad and subfloor.
Suspension is the stage where soil is broken loose from the fibre and held in the water so it can be carried away. It is governed by four variables that trade against one another — chemical action, heat, agitation and time. Lower one and something else has to carry more of the load.
A surfactant is what lets water and oil mix. Household soil is bound to carpet fibre primarily by oil, and oil does not dissolve in water, so something has to emulsify it. That is the job surfactants do — and the reason surfactant left behind in the pile is the trade’s most common failure.
An oxidiser breaks the chemical bonds that make a stain visible rather than lifting the material out. That is useful on some organic stains and genuinely risky on dyed fibre, because the same reaction that removes a stain’s colour can remove the carpet’s. Hydrogen peroxide is the one people reach for at home.
Most of it settles into the surfaces people spend the most uninterrupted hours pressed against — mattresses and soft furniture more than the floor — and the rest works its way down into the carpet pile. Dust is not one substance. It is skin and fibre and, the part that matters to a carpet, mineral grit walked in from outside.
Three things, and they arrive by different routes. Oils, which soak in and do not evaporate. Grit, which is walked in and works down the pile. And moisture, which should be gone in hours and sometimes is not. The point worth knowing is that a badly finished cleaning leaves more behind than it takes out, because residue is itself something for soil to stick to.
Because the fibre decides the chemistry, the temperature and the method, and the wrong combination causes damage that does not clean out. Nylon, polyester, olefin and wool each behave differently under heat, agitation and pH. Identification is the first step of the walk-through, before anything gets wet.
The affected area is flooded with enzyme solution in enough volume to reach the depth the urine reached, then extracted back out to draw contamination up out of the padding. A separate enzyme treatment then addresses microbiology and bacterial oils on the carpet face.
Dried urine crystallises. Those crystals release odour whenever humidity rises, which is why a smell you thought was gone comes roaring back on a warm damp day months later. Deodorisers do nothing to crystals — they must be dissolved and physically extracted.
Saturated subfloor swells and holds odour that no topical treatment can reach. At that point the correction is removing carpet and pad, sealing the subfloor with an odour barrier such as a pigmented shellac-based primer, and starting over. Two-story homes are worse because upstairs is wood subfloor, which absorbs. That is construction work, and Spiker does not do it — we are a cleaning company. What we do is a flood and flush, which is a real attempt at the problem and resolves many of them, though never a certainty.
