Low-moisture and bonnet carpet cleaning: what each method actually leaves behind

Why the biggest franchises do not agree with each other

The largest carpet cleaning companies in the world do not all clean the same way. Some use hot water extraction. Some use low-moisture encapsulation. Some use carbonated low-moisture solutions. Some use high-pH treated water in place of detergent.

That disagreement is informative. It means at least some of those methods were selected for reasons other than maximum soil removal — dry time, water use, equipment cost, and how easily a method scales across hundreds of locations are all legitimate business considerations. They are just not the same consideration as getting the most soil out of a carpet.

This page explains what each of the low-moisture approaches does mechanically, what it trades away, and where it genuinely belongs.

Encapsulation

How it works: a polymer-based solution, often oxygen-boosted, is applied and agitated with counter-rotating brushes. The polymer surrounds soil particles and crystallises as the carpet dries. The crystallised soil is then removed by vacuuming.

The design uses a small fraction of the water that extraction uses, and carpet dries in about an hour.

What it is good at: very fast dry time, very low moisture risk, and genuine suitability for commercial maintenance on low-pile glue-down carpet in buildings that cannot be taken out of service overnight. Encapsulation exists largely because of that requirement and it does that job well.

What it trades: the soil does not leave the building during the appointment. That is not a defect — it is how the method is designed, and its own literature describes vacuuming as the removal step.

The consequence in a home is worth thinking through. The sand embedded in a residential carpet is there precisely because a household vacuum could not remove it. Crystallising that sand and then asking the same vacuum to remove it is asking a tool that already failed to succeed on a second attempt. When the follow-up vacuuming is inadequate — and on a one-time residential job it usually is — the crystals stay in the pile. That is additional hard particulate sitting against the fiber, doing what sand does.

Bonnet cleaning

How it works: an absorbent pad is spun across the carpet face under the weight of a rotary machine. Solution is applied, the pad absorbs soil from the top of the pile, and the pad is changed as it loads.

What it is good at: speed, very low moisture, and appearance improvement on lightly soiled commercial carpet.

What it trades: two things, and the second is the more serious.

The first is depth. A pad in contact with the top of the pile cleans the top of the pile. Soil at the base of the fiber, near the backing, is untouched.

The second is mechanical. Weighted friction dragged across cut pile distorts and fuzzes the fiber — the same opening of the twist described elsewhere on this site as blooming, except produced in a single afternoon rather than over years. Cut pile is particularly vulnerable to this. It is why bonnet work is generally regarded as unsuitable for residential cut pile and why many carpet manufacturers publish hot water extraction as the required method for warranty purposes.

Carbonated low-moisture cleaning

How it works: a carbonated solution is applied, the carbonation acts as a physical lifting mechanism to bring soil up off the fiber surface, mechanical agitation is applied, and the loosened material is extracted with less water than conventional extraction.

What it is good at: fast dry time, strong agitation, and no surfactant film left in the pile because these solutions are commonly formulated without soaps, detergents or surfactants.

What it trades: this is a chemistry point rather than a criticism. Breaking the bond between oil and fiber is a chemical job and alkalinity is what does it. A solution deliberately formulated without surfactants is not doing that chemically — it is lifting particulate physically. On lightly soiled carpet that is often enough. On carpet with years of body oil in it, the oil film is the thing that has to come off.

The three things none of them do

None of these methods neutralises pH, because none of them has a rinse step. Whatever chemistry went in stays in until something removes it.

None produces the thermoplastic effect heat can have on crushed nylon and polyester pile, because none uses meaningful heat.

None extracts heavily embedded sand from the base of the pile, because a damp pad and a household vacuum cannot reach it.

They make carpet look better for a period while the underlying mechanism continues.

Where each one genuinely belongs

Encapsulation: commercial interim maintenance between restorative cleanings, on low-pile carpet, in spaces that cannot be closed. This is a real and appropriate use.

Bonnet: commercial appearance maintenance on loop pile. Not cut pile, and not residential.

Carbonated low moisture: lightly soiled carpet where dry time is the priority.

Hot water extraction with a neutralising rinse: anything with real oil loading, any home with animals, any urine that has reached the pad, and any carpet somebody is trying to preserve rather than freshen.

The one question that settles it

Ask any company: when you leave, is the soil out of my house or still in my carpet.

Every method above has an honest answer to that question. Knowing which one you are buying is the whole point.
