Animals plus children is closer to every 6 months, with protector annually or sooner. The real answer is the carpet — when oils build up enough that the traffic lanes look grey, it is already overdue.
Most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months to keep the warranty valid — that is the baseline this adjusts from. The practical test: if you can see the traffic lanes, you are already past due.
