How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?

Two older adults, light use: twelve to eighteen months. Low traffic and low oil, so the buildup is slow.

Two adults with three to five children: every six months. More people means roughly triple the wear a couple would put on the same carpet — more feet, more oil, more sand walked in.

Pets plus children: every six months without question, with a blacklight inspection alongside it so urine gets found while it is still a carpet problem rather than a subfloor one.

Separately from all of that: most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning every twelve to eighteen months to keep a warranty valid. Check your own warranty document — that clock runs whether or not the carpet looks like it needs it.

And the rule that overrides the schedule

If you can see discolouration, it is already too late. That is oils built up heavily enough that everything is sticking now — sand, bacteria, the lot — and the carpet has become a biological experiment. The floor is telling you plainly.

Nobody should be waiting for that signal. By the time it is visible the sand has been grinding the fibre for a while, and part of what you are looking at may already be permanent.

Why the interval is about oil, not appearance

Visible dirt is a poor trigger, because the damaging process is invisible in its early stages.

Oil deposits continuously — off bare feet, off shoes, out of the air from cooking. Once a film exists, sand adheres to it and stops falling to the base of the pile. From that point on, every step grinds sand against fiber.

By the time a traffic lane looks gray, part of that graying may already be permanent fiber bloom rather than soil. Waiting until carpet looks dirty means the abrasion has already been running for a long time.

What shifts it in either direction

Shorter: pets, children, light-coloured carpet, a busy entry with no matting, barefoot households, and properties on acreage or near open ground where fine dust is a constant load.

Longer: a shoes-off household with real entry matting and light traffic can genuinely stretch the interval. Entryways and hallways load faster than the rest of the house either way, and often deserve attention between full cleanings.

What matters more than the frequency

Vacuuming slowly and often. Speed matters more than suction on a household machine — three slow passes remove far more than ten fast ones, because the vacuum needs time to lift particulate out of the pile.

Annual protector reapplication. The coating on the fiber is what stands between sand and permanent fiber damage, and it wears off.

Dealing with pet accidents promptly, because the longer a deposit sits in the pad the further it travels.
