What is hot water extraction?
Hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) drives heated solution into the carpet under pressure to release soil and oils, then pulls it back out with vacuum, carrying the suspended soil with it. The cleaning is in the recovery — what comes back out — not in the water going in. Done properly, carpet dries in four to eight hours.
It is two jobs, and only one of them is the water
Suspension comes first. Heat, chemistry, agitation and dwell time work together to break the bond between soil and fiber and hold that soil in the water rather than in the carpet. None of that is cleaning yet — it is loosening.
Recovery is the second job, and it is the one that decides the outcome. Vacuum lifts the solution back out of the pile and into a tank on the truck. Soil that is suspended but not recovered dries straight back into the fiber, which is why a carpet can be thoroughly wetted and barely cleaned.
Why the machine sits in the truck
A truck-mounted unit produces water temperature and airflow that a portable cannot approach, and both halves matter. Higher heat means the chemistry works faster and more completely. Stronger vacuum means more water and more soil leave the building instead of settling back down as the carpet dries.
The counterintuitive result is that truck-mounted jobs dry faster despite putting more water down, because recovery is stronger. Spiker runs a HydraMaster Titan 575 — a Kubota 32.5 HP liquid-cooled engine driving a Competitor 4007 tri-lobe blower rated at 400+ CFM, a 4.0 GPM plunger pump, and solution heated to 230-250 degrees F at 1,200 PSI.
Heat does mechanical work, not just chemical work
Nylon and polyester are thermoplastic, which means heat can partially restore the twist the fiber was manufactured with. Crushed and matted pile recovers some of its original set during a hot extraction. That effect requires heat, so it is simply not available from a method that does not apply any.
The rinse is the step nobody checks for
An alkaline pre-spray is what releases oily soil from fiber. Alkaline residue left behind in the pile is sticky, and sticky attracts soil, so the carpet has to be rinsed with an acid rinse agent that brings it back to roughly neutral pH before the job is finished.
Skip it and the carpet resoils within weeks and the owner blames the cleaning. It also breaks the step after it: carpet protector will not bond to fiber carrying alkaline residue, so protector applied over an unrinsed carpet never attaches properly at all.
What to ask before anyone starts
Ask what the extraction airflow is and whether the system is truck-mounted. Ask whether an acid rinse is included and what pH the carpet is left at. Then ask where the soil is when the crew leaves — in a tank on the truck, or still in the carpet waiting to be vacuumed later.
Those three questions are answerable in a minute by anyone running the process properly.

Four to eight hours for most carpet. Airflow is the largest variable and the one you control — ceiling fans and cracked windows bring it closer to four. Thick carpet, dense padding and humid days push it longer.
