Why does carpet turn gray?
Two different things produce the same gray. One is oil — body oils, shoe oils and airborne cooking oil coating and discolouring the fiber — and that comes out. The other is bloomed fiber: sand held in that oil film has abraded the protective coating away and scratched the fiber, so it no longer reflects light evenly. That change is permanent.
The gray you can clean
Oil deposits on carpet continuously and from three directions: off bare feet, off shoes, and out of the air every time somebody cooks. It settles onto the fiber and discolours it directly, and it is not water-soluble, which is why a household machine passes over it.
Alkaline chemistry is what breaks that bond. Released and extracted, this half of the gray leaves with the water.
The gray you cannot
Once an oil film exists, sand stops falling to the base of the pile where a vacuum reaches it. It sticks to the film and sits at the height your foot lands, and every step grinds it into the fiber.
That abrades the protective coating the carpet was manufactured with. When enough of it is gone the sand reaches the fiber itself, the twist opens — the trade word is blooming — and the surface stops reflecting light uniformly. The eye reads scattered light as dull and gray.
No cleaning process reverses that, because it is a change in the physical surface of the fiber rather than something sitting on it. Anyone offering to restore the colour of a bloomed traffic lane is describing something that is not available.
Why the two get confused
They routinely occupy the same square foot. A cleaning removes the soil component and leaves the bloom, which is why a cleaned traffic lane can still look different from the rest of the room and why the honest version of that conversation belongs at the inspection rather than after the invoice.
What actually prevents it
Remove the oil on a real cycle, so sand keeps falling to the base of the pile where the vacuum can reach it. Vacuum slowly — passes matter more than suction, and three slow passes lift more than ten fast ones. Reapply protector so there is a sacrificial layer between the sand and the fiber. Two mats at every entry: a coarse one outside for grit, a flat cloth one inside for the oils.
Shoes off, or socks and slippers indoors, costs nothing at all and has the largest effect of anything on that list, because barefoot oil is what glues the sand to the wear surface in the first place.
The follow-up
questions.
The soil component comes out. The bloomed-fiber component does not — the fiber surface itself has changed and no cleaning method reverses that. An inspection separates the two before quoting, so nobody pays expecting a result that is not physically available.
Usually both, in the same area. The test is what it looks like after a proper extraction: what remains is the permanent part. That is why the walk-through happens before any equipment comes off the truck.
It does more than anything else you can buy, because it removes sand before it reaches the base of the pile. But once an oil film is holding sand at foot level, vacuuming cannot reach it — that is the point at which extraction is doing the preventive work.
