Fabric shows colour because light reflects off intact fibre. Where the surface has been worn flat, cleaning gets it clean — it does not put the surface back.
Colour that has gone, rather than a stain sitting on top of it
Bleach, benzoyl peroxide off a face cloth and some plant foods take the dye out of the fibre. What is left is colour that is no longer there, and no cleaning process puts it back.

Wool and other protein fibres are not synthetics with a different tag. Cleaned with standard high-pH synthetic chemistry they come back harsh and dull, and they do not come back from that.
