Triexta carpet

Triexta is a newer carpet fibre known for durability and built-in stain resistance, usually sold under brand names rather than as "triexta". It is soft and resilient like nylon but with stain protection engineered into the fibre rather than sprayed onto it — though like every fibre, it still grays if oils build up and hold sand.

What makes it different

Triexta was engineered to combine the traits of the older fibres: the resilience that keeps nylon looking like carpet in a hallway, and softness closer to polyester.

Its real distinction is that the stain resistance is built into the fibre itself rather than applied as a topical treatment. On most carpet, stain resistance is a coating that wears off. On triexta a large part of it is inherent to the material, so it does not wear away in the same manner.

Which does NOT mean it does not need protector

This is the misunderstanding worth heading off. Inherent stain resistance addresses spills. It does nothing about abrasion.

Carpet still leaves the mill with a protective coating whose job is to be the surface that takes the grinding instead of the fibre. That coating is consumable, it wears fastest exactly where you walk most, and once it is gone sand contacts the fibre directly.

So a triexta carpet is better protected against a glass of juice and no better protected against the mechanism that actually ends carpets.

It grays the same way everything else does

Oil arrives continuously — off bare feet, off shoes, out of the air from cooking. It coats and discolours the fibre.

Sand then sticks to that film instead of falling to the base of the pile where a vacuum reaches it, so it rides at the height your foot lands. Every step grinds it through the coating and then into the fibre surface, the twist opens, and the carpet reads dull and grey. That change is permanent on triexta exactly as on nylon.

What it needs

The same as any other fibre, and the stain-resistance marketing sometimes obscures that. Slow, frequent vacuuming. Extraction on a real cycle to take the oil film out. Protector reapplied so the sand has something to wear other than the fibre.

Fibre identification still comes first on any job, because triexta and polyester look similar and take different chemistry.

It does. Graying comes from oil holding sand at the wear surface until the fibre blooms, and no fibre is exempt from that. What varies is how long it takes.
