Olefin carpet
Olefin is moisture- and stain-resistant and common in Berbers and basements, but it is oil-loving — it attracts and holds oily soil, which is exactly what causes graying. Olefin especially needs the oils removed regularly, and it can be damaged by friction heat, so technique matters.
Why it gets specified
Olefin, also called polypropylene, barely absorbs water. That makes it close to immune to water-based staining and a reasonable choice where moisture is a factor — basements, indoor-outdoor installations, and loop constructions.
It is also inexpensive, which is why it appears so often in Berber and in rental properties.
The trade nobody mentions at the point of sale
Olefin is strongly oleophilic. It attracts oily soil more readily than any other common carpet fibre, and once that oil is in the pile it discolours the fibre directly.
That is the whole graying mechanism, running faster than usual: oil coats the fibre, sand stops falling to the base of the pile and sticks to the film instead, and every footstep grinds it across the wear surface until the fibre blooms.
So the fibre that resists your spilled drink is the fibre that most needs the oils taken out on a schedule. Those two facts are usually sold separately.
Friction heat is a real risk
Olefin has a low melting point relative to other carpet fibres, which makes technique matter. Aggressive mechanical agitation generates friction heat, and friction heat on olefin can permanently distort or fuse the fibre.
That is one reason bonnet cleaning is a poor fit here specifically: a weighted absorbent pad spun across the face under machine weight is exactly the mechanism that produces friction damage, and the Carpet and Rug Institute does not recommend it for cut pile in any case.
What it needs
Alkaline chemistry with real dwell time to release the oil, hot extraction to flush it and the sand out, and an acid rinse so nothing sticky is left behind. Controlled agitation rather than aggressive scrubbing.
And a shorter interval than you would run on nylon, because the oil arrives faster and does more damage once it is there.

It is excellent against water-based stains and moisture, and poor against oily soil. Whether that is a good trade depends on the room and on whether it will actually be cleaned on a cycle.
Because it attracts oily soil, and oil is what discolours fibre and holds abrasive sand at the wear surface. It is not that olefin collects more dirt — it is that it holds the kind that does the damage.
By technique, yes. Friction heat from aggressive agitation can distort the fibre because olefin has a relatively low melting point. Identifying the fibre before anything touches it is the point of the inspection.
