Does carpet cleaning shrink carpet?

Properly done hot water extraction does not shrink modern synthetic carpet. Over-wetting natural fibres like wool, or older jute-backed carpet, without proper extraction and drying can cause shrinkage — which is why fibre identification and strong recovery matter. A cleaner who identifies the fibre first avoids the risk.

What is actually at risk, and what is not

Nylon, polyester and olefin do not shrink from being cleaned. They are synthetics, they do not absorb water into the fibre structure the way a natural fibre does, and a properly recovered extraction leaves them damp rather than saturated.

The risk sits with natural fibres and older constructions — wool, and particularly carpet with a jute backing, which was common before synthetic backings took over. Jute absorbs, and absorbed water plus slow drying is what pulls a carpet in at the edges.

It is a recovery problem, not a water problem

The variable is not how much solution went down. It is how much came back out.

Strong recovery leaves carpet damp and drying in four to eight hours. Weak recovery leaves the backing wet for a day or more, and that is the condition in which a susceptible backing shrinks and the carpet lifts at the perimeter.

The related thing people mistake for shrinkage

Ripples appearing after a cleaning are almost always latent buckling from an installation that was never power-stretched properly. Moisture lets the carpet relax and reveals slack that was already there.

It was not caused by the cleaning — the cleaning exposed it. An installer can power-stretch it, and after that it does not recur. Worth knowing, because it is a repair rather than a cleaning failure.

How the risk gets managed

Fibre and backing are identified during the walk-through, before anything gets wet. On anything susceptible the job runs with less moisture, more recovery passes and controlled airflow.

That is also why the inspection is not a formality. A cleaner who cannot tell you what your carpet is made of cannot tell you what it will do when it gets wet.
