Vacuum before it embeds

Hair and dander sit loose at first and get progressively harder to remove as they work down into the pile. Slow passes, weekly at minimum, more in the rooms the animals actually use.

Animals also add oils, and oil is what holds abrasive sand up at the wear surface. That is why a household with animals runs a shorter cleaning interval — it is the oil load rather than the hair that decides it.

Deal with an accident in the first ten minutes

Blot with plain water and a white cloth, working from the outside inward. No heat, because heat sets the protein and locks the odour in. No ammonia-based cleaner, because it smells like urine to the animal and invites a repeat.

Do not saturate. What reaches the backing wicks back up for days.

Own a blacklight

A cheap UV torch used in a fully darkened room shows what is actually there. Dried urine fluoresces, and the deposit underneath is almost always far wider than any mark visible in daylight.

It costs about ten pounds and it is the highest-value preventive step in the house, because it lets you find a spot in week one instead of year three — which is the difference between a carpet problem and a subfloor problem.

And a practical one for furniture: a waterproof pet blanket over the cushions, vacuumed underneath regularly.
