What is the correct way to vacuum carpet?
Slowly, and especially in the traffic lanes — fast passes are the reason a vacuum misses things. Slow passes give the machine time to lift sand and allergens up out of the fibre before they grind it. Vacuum often, use a machine with good filtration, and slow down rather than racing through rooms.
Speed matters more than suction
This is the single most valuable thing you can do to a carpet and it costs nothing. Three slow passes remove more than ten fast ones, because the machine needs contact time to work particulate up out of the pile.
Most households buy suction and then move too fast to use it.
Vacuum the lanes, not the middle
The middle of a room nobody walks through is not where the soil is. A hallway lane holds several times the soil of the carpet three feet away.
In practice most people vacuum the visible open floor and skip the lanes, which is exactly backwards.
What it can and cannot reach
A vacuum reaches dry particulate that is still loose at the base of the pile, which is most of it in a carpet with no oil film. That sand is the thing that abrades fibre, so taking it out is genuine preventive maintenance.
What it cannot reach is sand that an oil film is holding up at foot level. That needs extraction, because the oil has to be released chemically before the sand will move at all.

Weekly at minimum, and more in the lanes. If there are animals, more again — pulling hair and dander before it embeds is far easier than getting it out afterwards.
Filtration matters, and so does a working brush. Beyond that, technique beats price: a slow pass with a modest machine takes out more than a fast pass with an expensive one.
It helps, and it saves you money — pre-vacuuming is free if you do it before we arrive and $25 per room if we do. Dry soil has to come out before moisture goes down or it turns to mud in the pile.
