Can old stains really be removed from carpet?
Some come out completely and some do not, and it depends on what caused them and whether the fibre was dyed or bleached. A cleaner who inspects properly before starting can tell you honestly what will and will not match. Spiker tells you the truth up front rather than promising everything.
The question is what it did to the fibre
A stain sitting on the fibre is soil, and soil comes out. A stain that changed the colour of the fibre is not soil in the first place, so there is nothing sitting there to lift.
That is the whole distinction. Red food colouring, some drink mixes and certain medicines are accepted by the fibre chemically — the carpet has been dyed. Bleach, some acne products and certain cleaners have taken colour out instead. Both are permanent, and both need a repair rather than a cleaning.
Age matters, but not as much as chemistry
Time works against you because it gives a deposit longer to migrate into the backing and the pad, and because it lets whatever was spilled finish reacting with the fibre.
But an old coffee spill on nylon may lift beautifully while a fresh one that somebody attacked with the wrong bottle may not. Which is why the next section matters more than the calendar.
What people did to it first is usually the deciding factor
Each home remedy changes the chemistry of the spot. By the third attempt a professional is working against four unknowns instead of one, and a stain that would have come out no longer does.
Two do the most damage. Optical brighteners in some store spotters leave a permanently lighter patch that becomes obvious after a real cleaning takes the surrounding soil out. And dish soap is close to impossible to rinse fully out, so the spot resoils faster and darker than the carpet around it.
Tell your cleaner what went on it. It changes what is possible and it is worth far more than hoping it goes unnoticed.
How you find out before you pay
The walk-through happens before any equipment comes off the truck. Fibre gets identified, the spots get looked at, and on any home with animals a blacklight goes on in a darkened room to map what is actually there.
Then you are told which spots will improve, which will not, and which need a repair rather than a clean. That conversation belongs at the start of the job rather than after it.
