Why is high-pH shampoo bad for carpet?

High-pH shampoo is good at releasing oils and harmful if it is left in the carpet — which is exactly what happens with rental and home machines that have no rinse. Alkaline residue is sticky, attracts soil, can affect the fibre over time, and stops protector bonding. The alkaline stage has to be neutralised.

Household soil is bound to carpet fibre primarily by oil, and oil does not dissolve in water. Alkaline chemistry is what emulsifies it, and any method that genuinely takes oil off fibre is using alkalinity to do it, whatever the label says.

So the pre-spray is doing the right job. The question is only what happens to it afterwards.

What high-pH residue does while it sits there

It is sticky, so it holds soil and the carpet resoils quickly. It can leave fibre feeling stiff or crunchy as it dries.

On wool it is worse than that. Wool is a protein fibre and reacts to alkaline chemistry the way hair does — high-pH cleaners strip its natural lanolin and leave it harsh, brittle and permanently dulled. That is a change in the fibre rather than soil on it, so it does not clean back out.

And it blocks the next step: protector will not bond to fibre carrying alkaline residue.

Which is why the sequence matters more than the products

Alkaline to release the oil. Acid rinse to neutralise and carry it out. Then protector, onto clean neutralised fibre. Skip the middle step and the third one does not work.

That is not a marketing position, it is pH. A carpet should finish a job at roughly neutral or slightly acidic, and a company that cannot tell you what pH it leaves your carpet at has not decided.
