Why does my carpet smell worse after it was cleaned?
Usually because water went in and not enough came back out. Moisture left in the backing and pad, sitting on soil or residue that was already there, sours as it dries slowly. Proper hot water extraction recovers most of the water in the same pass, so the carpet is damp rather than soaked and dries in four to eight hours.
The recovery half is the half that decides this
Extraction is a separate stage from cleaning. Solution going in suspends the soil; vacuum coming back out is what removes it, and it takes most of the moisture with it.
When recovery is weak, two things happen at once. Suspended soil dries back into the fiber, and the pad underneath stays wet for a day or more. Damp organic material at room temperature is the whole recipe for a sour smell.
The second cause: something was already there
Water reactivates what is dormant. A urine deposit in the pad crystallises as it dries and releases odour whenever humidity rises — and a cleaning is a humidity event.
This is why the blacklight inspection comes before the cleaning rather than after. Clean the room first and you dilute and spread the very thing you are trying to find, while reactivating it. The inspection comes first, the treatment plan comes from what the light shows, and the general room cleaning comes last.
What good recovery looks like
Overlapping passes with dry strokes between wet ones, so the wand is removing more than it is depositing. Enough airflow at the tool to lift the water rather than push it around — Spiker recovers through a 400+ CFM tri-lobe blower on a two-inch hose.
Then airflow in the room. Ceiling fans and cracked windows bring an eight-hour dry closer to four, and airflow is the one variable you control after the truck leaves.
What not to do about it
Do not spray a fragrance over it. Most of those products are sticky by design and go on with nothing to rinse them out, so you end up with residue holding soil on top of a smell that is still being produced underneath.
Odour control that works is subtractive — you take the source out. Anything applied on top is covering something that is still there.

Four to eight hours for most carpet. A carpet still wet the next day was not properly extracted, and that is the condition in which a musty smell develops.
Because the deposit is in the pad, not on the carpet face, and moisture reactivates it. Surface cleaning makes the smell disappear for a week and then brings it back. It needs a sub-surface flush, mapped with UV first.
If it is trapped moisture, yes, once it dries — get airflow across it immediately. If it is a deposit in the pad, no. That one returns on every humid day until the source is treated.
