Graying
Graying is permanent color loss caused by fiber damage, not soil. Carpet shows color because light reflects off intact fiber. Once fiber is abraded and bloomed, light scatters instead of reflecting, so the carpet reads dull and gray regardless of how clean it is.
What is actually happening
This is the honest bad news of the trade. A greyed carpet can be perfectly clean and still look dead. The optical surface that produced the color no longer exists. Anyone promising to restore the color of a greyed carpet is selling something that is not possible.

Everything upstream: remove sand, remove oils, keep protector current, clean on a real cycle.
