Why is very cheap carpet cleaning usually a problem?
A very low advertised room rate generally does not cover the time, product and equipment a full sequence requires. The steps that get dropped are the invisible ones: dwell time, the acid rinse, and thorough extraction. The carpet looks clean on the day and resoils quickly, because residue and suspended soil were left in the pile.
What a full sequence costs in time
A properly run job includes inspection, dry soil removal, alkaline pre-spray, agitation, dwell time, hot extraction, an acid rinse, thorough recovery, grooming and a walk-through.
Dwell time in particular cannot be compressed. Chemistry needs minutes to break an oil bond, and the four suspension variables trade against each other — cut time and you need more heat, more chemical or more agitation to compensate.
A price that only works if the technician is in and out in twenty minutes has already decided which steps are not happening.
What gets cut first, and why
The acid rinse, because the customer cannot see it. Dwell time, because it looks like standing around. Extraction passes, because more passes take longer. Pre-vacuuming, because the customer assumes the machine does everything.
Every one of those is invisible on the day of service. That is not a coincidence — it is the selection criterion.
Why the cheap job can cost more than the expensive one
A carpet cleaned without a rinse resoils faster than it did before, because residue is sticky and holds soil. So it gets cleaned more often, and every one of those cleanings runs sand across fiber whose protector was never reapplied.
The cheap job accelerates the exact damage that ends the carpet. That is the real arithmetic, and it does not show up for a year.
How the bait pattern works
An extremely low room rate gets the appointment. On arrival the quote grows — traffic-lane treatment, pet treatment, protector, deodoriser, stair charges, minimum charges — and by then you have blocked out the day and moved the furniture.
The oldest version is the room count: a hallway becomes a room, a walk-in closet becomes a room, a large living room becomes two. Bait and switch is a defined practice under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, and carpet companies appear in that enforcement record going back to the 1970s.
The tell is a price that does not correspond to any described process. Ask what is included at the advertised rate, in steps, before booking.
What honest pricing looks like
Published numbers you can read before you dial. Carpet from $50 per room, where a room is up to 15×15 feet and a staircase is one room. Pet enzyme $25 per room. Protector $25 per room. Pet odour from $30 per 3×3 area, quoted only after a UV inspection. Pre-vacuuming $25 per room, free if you do it yourself. A $200 minimum service charge, stated everywhere a price appears.
Then a walk-through before any equipment comes off the truck, the complete number, and it does not change unless you change the job. If something will not come out, you hear it then rather than afterwards.

Because the work varies enormously and the low numbers usually are not real. A very low per-room advertised price typically covers a fast surface pass with minimal pre-treatment and no dwell time. Ask what is included, and get the number before anyone starts.
The chemistry and fuel for a whole house exceed that on their own, so the money has to come out of the process. Usually it comes from diluted product, a skipped acid rinse, or no protector — often all three.
Understand what is being applied. Most of those products are fragranced and sticky by design and go on at the end of the job with nothing to remove them. Sticky residue attracts and holds soil, including the sand that does the abrading.
