STRAIGHT ANSWER

Why is Spiker 4.8 on Yelp when the reviews are 5 stars?

Yelp runs a filter that hides reviews it does not "recommend", and 256 of Spiker’s genuine customer reviews sit in that hidden section. Hidden reviews do not count toward the visible average, which is why it reads 4.8. On Google, where reviews are not filtered this way, Spiker holds 5.0 across its Galt and Lodi listings.

What the filter actually does

Yelp does not show every review a business receives. It runs recommendation software that decides which reviews are displayed and counted, and files the rest under a separate heading at the very bottom of the page.

For Spiker, 256 reviews are sitting in that section. They are from real, paying customers. They do not count toward the star rating, which is the whole reason the visible average reads 4.8 rather than what customers actually gave.

Go and look — it takes ten seconds

You do not have to take our word for any of this. Open Spiker on Yelp, scroll to the very bottom of the page, and click the line that reads "other reviews that are not currently recommended".

That is where the 256 are. Read a few of them and decide for yourself whether they look like the kind of reviews that ought to be hidden.

The one fact we will let speak for itself

Spiker does not advertise with Yelp and never has.

We are not going to tell you what that means, because we cannot see inside their filter and we are not going to claim we can. We will just put the two facts next to each other and leave them there.

Where the unfiltered numbers are

Google does not filter this way. Spiker holds a 5.0 rating there across two separate listings — the Galt profile and the Lodi profile, each with its own review history, because they are two separate operations serving two separate cities.

That is the number worth checking, and both listings are linked from the footer of this site so you can go straight to them rather than taking a figure off a marketing page.

Why we put this on the website at all

Because the alternative is quietly hoping nobody notices a 4.8 and wonders what went wrong. Nothing went wrong.

The same principle runs through the rest of this site: we tell you when a stain will not come out, we tell you that pet urine treatment is an attempt and that we never guarantee it, and we tell you when a floor has gone past what cleaning can fix. Being straight about our own review page is the easy version of that.

Yelp runs recommendation software that decides which reviews are displayed and counted toward the average. The rest are placed in a "not currently recommended" section at the bottom of the page, where they are still readable but do not affect the rating. For Spiker there are 256 of them.

Scroll to the very bottom of the business page and click "other reviews that are not currently recommended". It works on any business, not just this one, and it is worth doing before you judge any company by its Yelp score.

On Google, 5.0 across the Galt and Lodi listings, which carry separate review histories. On Yelp the visible average is 4.8 with 256 reviews filtered out of the count. Both listings are linked in the footer so you can check rather than take our word for it.
