Why do rental carpet shampooers make carpet get dirty faster?
Because they leave detergent residue behind. The rental process fills the machine with hot water and soap but includes no acid rinse to neutralise the carpet and pull that residue back out. Sticky detergent residue attracts new soil, so the carpet gets dirty faster than it did before it was cleaned.
The step that is missing
Cleaning solution is designed to hold soil in suspension so it can be pulled out. That job is done by alkaline chemistry, and alkalinity is what releases the oil binding soil to the fibre.
Once it has done that, it is still in your carpet. High-pH material left to dry in the pile is residue, and residue is sticky. It is not that the machine failed to clean; it is that half the process was never on offer.
Why the carpet then soils faster than before
Sticky residue holds on to whatever crosses it. Dirt sticks, dust sticks, and sand sticks — which is the mechanism that moves abrasion from the base of the pile up to the wear surface where it does the most damage.
The giveaway is timing. Traffic lanes darken again within days to weeks, and they darken faster than they did before the cleaning. A worn carpet soils at a steady rate; a residue-loaded carpet soils at an accelerating one.
What to do if it has already happened
Residue can be flushed back out. Say so at the inspection — that changes the approach, and the fix is a proper rinse rather than another coat of anything.
Hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) recovers what it puts down, and a neutralising acid rinse takes the pH back toward neutral so nothing is left behind holding soil.

They are not designed to damage it, but leaving residue behind has a real cost. Carpet that resoils faster gets cleaned more often, and every one of those cleanings runs sand across fibre whose protector was never reapplied.
The rental counter does not sell one, and dosing pH by guesswork on your own carpet is not a good trade. If a carpet has already been left alkaline, the practical fix is a proper extraction with a neutralising rinse.
Commonly two to six weeks. It looks fine on the day, which is exactly why the problem is not obvious and why the step gets skipped in the first place.
