CARPET SCIENCE · FRICTION BURN, PAD BURN
Bonnet friction damage
Yes. Bonnet cleaning spins an absorbent pad across the carpet face under machine weight. On cut pile, weighted friction distorts and fuzzes the fiber — producing in one afternoon the same blooming that normally takes years. The Carpet and Rug Institute does not recommend it for cut pile.
What is actually happening
It also cleans only the top of the pile, leaving the base untouched, and has no rinse step so pH is never neutralised.
How you prevent it
For residential cut pile, use hot water extraction. Check your carpet warranty — many specify it.
