Can carpet be cleaned without chemicals?

Water alone does not remove oil, and household soil is bound to carpet fiber primarily by oil. Any method that removes oil is using chemistry to do it, whether it is labelled detergent, pre-spray, oxygenated solution or high-pH treated water. The meaningful question is not whether chemistry is used but whether it is neutralised and extracted afterwards.

Why water alone is not enough

Oil does not dissolve in water. That is the whole problem.

Household soil is a mix of particulate held in place by an oil film — body oils, shoe oils, and cooking oils that settle out of the air. To lift that film off the fiber you need something that emulsifies oil, which means alkaline chemistry.

Hot water helps considerably, because heat lowers oil viscosity and accelerates the reaction. But heat is an assist, not a substitute.

What "chemical free" usually means

In practice it almost always means no conventional surfactant. Those methods still apply something chemically active.

Oxygenated solutions apply an oxidiser plus a polymer. Carbonated solutions apply a carbonated agent designed to lift particulate physically. High-pH electrolyzed water applies alkalinity produced by electrolysis rather than by a detergent formulation.

All of those are chemistry. Alkaline water is alkaline, and calling it water does not make it pH-neutral.

The question that actually matters

Not whether chemistry was used. Whether it left.

Residue is the real complaint people have about carpet cleaning chemicals, and residue is a rinse-and-extraction problem. An alkaline cleaner that is neutralised with an acid rinse and then extracted under high airflow leaves the carpet near neutral pH with the oil gone.

A method that avoids surfactant but leaves alkalinity in the pile has changed which residue is present rather than removing it. That is a real distinction and it is worth asking about directly.

What to ask

What is releasing the oil in your process? What is the pH of what is left in my carpet when you leave? Do you rinse, and is the rinse acidic?

Any company that has thought about its own method answers all three without pausing.

Not one that removes oil. Every method that breaks the oil-to-fiber bond uses alkalinity to do it, whatever the label says. What varies is whether that alkalinity is neutralised and extracted before the carpet dries.

The products used are formulated for occupied homes and are rinsed out during extraction, which is the important part — residue is what causes both resoiling and irritation. Standard practice is to stay off the carpet until it is dry. If anyone in the house has a specific sensitivity, say so when booking and the chemistry is adjusted.

Heat helps break the oil bond but does not replace the chemistry that emulsifies it, and vapour alone brings almost no flushing volume. On hard, sealed surfaces genuine hot steam does far more real work, which is why tile is cleaned differently from carpet.
