Can a rental carpet shampooer cause mildew?
It can, because these machines put water down and lack the suction to pull enough of it back out. They also do not produce the heat and airflow that dry a carpet quickly, so the carpet and the padding stay wet too long. Moisture trapped in the pad is exactly where mildew and musty odour begin.
The problem is recovery, not water
Extraction is a separate stage from cleaning. Solution going in suspends the soil; vacuum coming back out removes it and takes most of the moisture with it.
A truck-mounted job commonly dries faster than a portable one despite putting more water down, because recovery is stronger. So "less water" is not automatically safer — what matters is the ratio of what goes in to what comes back out.
What happens while the pad stays wet
Damp organic material at room temperature sours. The pad is absorbent, it sits under a carpet that slows evaporation, and it is out of sight the whole time.
Properly extracted carpet is damp rather than soaked and dries in four to eight hours with airflow. Carpet still wet a day or two later is the condition in which this starts.
And the mistake that makes it certain
Putting furniture back onto damp carpet. A sofa blocks airflow completely and the moisture underneath has nowhere to go. Foam blocks and plastic tabs lift the legs, not the piece.
That is the most common callback in this trade and it is entirely preventable. If you want the carpet under a piece cleaned, move it out of the room and bring it back the next day once everything is dry.
The follow-up
questions.
Four to eight hours for most carpet, with airflow. Still wet the next day means recovery was inadequate, and that is the condition in which a musty smell develops.
Over-wetting without adequate recovery can create the conditions for it, particularly in the pad. Cleaning does not remediate existing mould — if carpet has been wet long enough to grow it, that is a remediation job.
Airflow, which is the one variable you control after the truck leaves. Ceiling fans and cracked windows bring an eight-hour dry closer to four.
