What does IICRC S100 mean?
The S100 is the industry standard for professional carpet cleaning, published by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. It defines the correct sequence: inspection, dry soil removal, suspension, extraction and drying. A cleaner trained to and operating by it is following the established method rather than improvising.
What the standard actually says
It describes soil removal as a sequence rather than an event: dry soil removal first, then suspension of the remaining soil, then extraction, then drying.
Suspension itself is governed by four variables that trade against one another — chemical action, heat, agitation and time. Lower one and something else has to carry more of the load. That framework is what lets you compare two methods honestly instead of arguing about adjectives.
Why it is worth asking about
Most companies describe their work in adjectives. Deep. Powerful. Advanced. Those are not a process and they give you nothing to compare.
A company working to the S100 can tell you where it sits on each of those four dials. One that cannot has not decided, which means the decision gets made differently on every job by whoever showed up.
