What temperature should carpet cleaning water be?

Heat is one of four variables that govern soil suspension, alongside chemical action, agitation and time. Truck-mounted systems commonly deliver solution between 200 and 250 degrees F; Spiker runs 230-250 degrees F at the wand. Lower-heat methods have to compensate with more chemical action, more agitation, or more dwell time.

Where heat fits in the standard

The IICRC S100 standard describes soil removal as a sequence: dry soil removal, suspension, extraction, drying. Suspension itself is governed by four interacting variables — chemical action, heat, agitation and time.

They trade against each other. Turn heat down and you need more of something else to get the same suspension. That is the honest frame for every method argument in this trade.

What heat does specifically

Heat accelerates chemical reactions and lowers the viscosity of oils. Since household soil is bound to carpet fiber primarily by oil, heat is doing direct work on the exact bond that has to break.

That is why extraction systems invest so heavily in heat exchangers. Spiker’s truckmount captures exhaust heat from both the blower and the liquid-cooled engine, holding solution at 230-250 degrees F at the wand.

Heat also does mechanical work. Nylon and polyester are thermoplastic, so crushed and matted pile recovers some of its manufactured set during a hot extraction — an effect that simply is not available to a method that applies no heat.

Can water be too hot

Yes. Some fibers and some dye systems are heat-sensitive, wool in particular — it is a protein fiber and it is alkaline-sensitive as well. That is why fiber identification happens during the inspection before any solution touches the carpet, and why temperature and solution strength are matched to the fiber rather than run at one setting everywhere.

Why low-heat methods exist

Low-moisture systems generally operate at or near ambient temperature and compensate with aggressive mechanical agitation and specialised chemistry. That is a coherent design and it produces fast dry times. It is a different position on the same four dials, not a free upgrade — which is the whole of the argument.
