Is it sanitary to rent a shared carpet cleaning machine?
A rented shampooer is a shared machine that has been in many other homes, and there is no way to know what it cleaned before you. People often rent them for the worst emergencies, and the machines are not inspected or sanitised between renters. It is worth thinking about before it comes indoors.
Think about why people rent one
Not usually for routine maintenance. They get rented for the emergency — a flea infestation, a biohazard, a contamination clean-up, the aftermath of an animal or an illness.
That is the previous job your machine may have done, and the recovery tank, the hose and the brush head all had contact with it.
Nobody is checking it between renters
There is no inspection step and no sanitising step in that transaction. The machine is returned, sometimes rinsed, and put back on the shelf for the next person.
We are not going to tell you what is in any particular machine, because we cannot see inside it and we will not invent a claim. What we can say is that nothing in the process guarantees anything about it.
And it is doing the other things badly anyway
No rinse stage, so alkaline residue stays in the pile and the carpet resoils faster than before. Limited suction, so water stays in the pad longer than it should.
That combination is the real argument. The hygiene question is worth raising; the cleaning outcome is the part that costs you a carpet.
The follow-up
questions.
There is no inspection or sanitising step in the rental process. Whether an individual machine was rinsed depends entirely on the previous renter and the shop.
Frequently the worst jobs — infestations, biohazard clean-ups, and accidents. That is the point worth knowing before one comes into your house.
A truck-mount is one operator’s own equipment, maintained by the person whose reputation depends on it, and the recovery tank never enters your home. That is a different arrangement from a shared machine.
