What is hot water extraction?

Hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) drives heated solution into the carpet under pressure to release soil and oils, then pulls it back out with vacuum, carrying the suspended soil with it. The cleaning is in the recovery — what comes back out — not in the water going in. Done properly, carpet dries in four to eight hours.

What does CFM mean in carpet cleaning, and why does it matter?

CFM measures the airflow a cleaning machine’s vacuum blower moves. That airflow is the mechanical force lifting suspended soil and rinse water out of the carpet and into the recovery tank. Spiker’s truckmount moves 400+ CFM through a two-inch hose. Extraction is a separate stage from cleaning, and it decides what leaves the building.

Why does my carpet look worse after cleaning?

Three common causes: wicking, where soil deep in the backing rises as the carpet dries; residue left behind that attracts new soil quickly; and fiber damage that was hidden by soil and became visible once the soil was gone. The third one is not damage caused by the cleaning — it is a condition the soil had been masking.

Why does carpet turn gray?

Two different things produce the same gray. One is oil — body oils, shoe oils and airborne cooking oil coating and discolouring the fiber — and that comes out. The other is bloomed fiber: sand held in that oil film has abraded the protective coating away and scratched the fiber, so it no longer reflects light evenly. That change is permanent.

What is fiber blooming in carpet?

Fiber blooming is permanent physical damage to carpet fiber caused by abrasion. Embedded sand, held at foot level by an oil film, grinds the fiber with every step, cutting through the protective coating and then into the fiber surface itself. The altered surface reflects light differently, which reads as gray. Cleaning does not reverse it.

Is carpet protector worth it?

Carpet is manufactured with a protective coating on the fiber. Foot traffic and embedded sand abrade that coating away, and once enough is gone the fiber blooms and the colour change is permanent. Reapplying protector annually is the mechanism that prevents that, which is why Spiker treats it as maintenance rather than an upsell.

Does carpet cleaning actually remove the sand in my carpet?

Hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) removes embedded sand because the alkaline solution first releases the oil film holding the sand in place, and high-airflow extraction then flushes it out of the pile into a recovery tank on the truck. A vacuum alone cannot reach sand that is stuck to oil above the base of the pile.

What temperature should carpet cleaning water be?

Heat is one of four variables that govern soil suspension, alongside chemical action, agitation and time. Truck-mounted systems commonly deliver solution between 200 and 250 degrees F; Spiker runs 230-250 degrees F at the wand. Lower-heat methods have to compensate with more chemical action, more agitation, or more dwell time.

Can carpet be cleaned without chemicals?

Water alone does not remove oil, and household soil is bound to carpet fiber primarily by oil. Any method that removes oil is using chemistry to do it, whether it is labelled detergent, pre-spray, oxygenated solution or high-pH treated water. The meaningful question is not whether chemistry is used but whether it is neutralised and extracted afterwards.

Why does my carpet get dirty so fast after cleaning?

Because something was left in it. Detergent that is not fully rinsed out stays in the pile as a sticky residue, and that residue grabs soil from every shoe that crosses it. The carpet is not attracting dirt because it is worn — it is attracting dirt because it is tacky. A properly rinsed carpet does not resoil in a fortnight.

Why does my carpet smell worse after it was cleaned?

Usually because water went in and not enough came back out. Moisture left in the backing and pad, sitting on soil or residue that was already there, sours as it dries slowly. Proper hot water extraction recovers most of the water in the same pass, so the carpet is damp rather than soaked and dries in four to eight hours.

How do I know if there is pet urine in my carpet?

Urine deposits fluoresce under a blacklight in a darkened room, showing a map of what has soaked through the carpet into the pad. Daylight inspection misses most of it, because the visible surface stain is usually far smaller than the deposit underneath and older deposits often show no surface mark at all.

How do I get pet smell out of carpet?

Pet urine soaks into the pad beneath the carpet, so surface cleaning never reaches the source. The honest sequence is: locate it with a blacklight, flood the area with enzyme in enough volume to reach the depth the urine reached, extract until the recovery water runs clear, then give the enzymes time to work. It is an attempt, not a guarantee.

Why does my house smell when I come back from vacation?

Odour sources in carpet, pad and upholstery stay biologically active while a house is closed up. With no airflow and no air conditioning cycling, humidity rises and volatile compounds accumulate instead of being diluted. Opening the door releases a concentrated version of an odour that was always being produced but is normally carried away.

How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?

Most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months to keep a warranty valid, and that is the number to plan around. Households adjust it downward: any animals in the home moves it to every 6 to 8 months, animals plus children to roughly every 6. The practical test — if you can see the traffic lanes, you are past due.

Carpet maintenance runs on three separate clocks, not one. Vacuum slowly, weekly at minimum and more in traffic lanes. Is carpet bad for allergies?

More contested than most people assume. Carpet traps particulate and holds it until it is vacuumed or extracted; hard floors let the same particulate stay airborne and redistribute with every footstep. Neither surface is automatically better — what decides it is whether it is actually maintained. In most homes the mattress and the upholstery hold more of the load than the floor does.

Ask five things: what temperature the solution reaches at the wand, whether they neutralise the alkaline cleaner with an acid rinse, what their extraction CFM is and whether it is truck-mounted, whether the soil leaves the property during the appointment, and how much solution actually reaches the pad on a urine job.

Three tells separate a defined process from a script. Do they inspect with a blacklight before quoting pet work, or estimate it? Do they work to the IICRC S100 sequence, and can they name it? Do they acid rinse to take the residue back out, and will they tell you how long the carpet stays damp? Anyone doing it properly is glad to be asked.

Why is very cheap carpet cleaning usually a problem?

A very low advertised room rate generally does not cover the time, product and equipment a full sequence requires. The steps that get dropped are the invisible ones: dwell time, the acid rinse, and thorough extraction. The carpet looks clean on the day and resoils quickly, because residue and suspended soil were left in the pile.

Do store-bought spot removers damage carpet?

Some contain optical brighteners — fluorescent dyes that make a treated area look brighter under light rather than removing the soil. They can leave a permanently lighter patch that becomes more obvious after a professional cleaning. Test any product on a white coffee filter under a blacklight before it goes anywhere near carpet.
