What your carpet is actually holding
Three things, and they arrive by different routes. Oils, which soak in and do not evaporate. Grit, which is walked in and works down the pile. And moisture, which should be gone in hours and sometimes is not. The point worth knowing is that a badly finished cleaning leaves more behind than it takes out, because residue is itself something for soil to stick to.
What is actually happening
Oils are the foundation of the problem: barefoot oils, the oils animals leave where they lie, food and drink worked into the pile. They are not dirt in the ordinary sense — they are a sticky film through a fibre matrix, and everything walked in afterwards adheres to them instead of falling to the base. Then moisture that should not still be there. A carpet properly extracted is damp and dry in four to eight hours; one left soaked keeps a wet pad under it for a day or more, and a wet pad is what produces the smell people notice a week later. Add a fragranced deodoriser applied at the end of a job with nothing rinsing it out and you have carrier, trapped moisture and body oils in one place. The room smells better for a week and is measurably dirtier afterwards. Spiker measures none of this on a residential job and claims no outcome from it.
How you prevent it
Subtractive rather than additive. Extract the oils out on a real cycle, get the recovery right so the pad is not left wet, and keep fragranced residue off the pile. Never set furniture back onto damp carpet — a sofa blocks airflow completely, and mildew under a piece nobody looks at is the most common callback in this trade.
