Surfactants

A surfactant is what lets water and oil mix. Household soil is bound to carpet fibre primarily by oil, and oil does not dissolve in water, so something has to emulsify it. That is the job surfactants do — and the reason surfactant left behind in the pile is the trade’s most common failure.

What is actually happening

The molecule has two ends: one attracted to water, one to oil. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a pre-spray lifts a film that plain hot water passes straight over. The failure mode is what happens afterwards. Surfactant that is not thoroughly rinsed out dries in place still doing its job — holding on to whatever touches it. That residue is sticky, it attracts soil, and the carpet resoils faster than it did before it was cleaned. Some methods respond by removing the surfactant entirely and cleaning with a carbonated or high-pH solution instead. That solves the sticky-film problem honestly, and it costs the chemistry that emulsifies oil, or leaves alkalinity in the pile with nothing to neutralise it.

How you prevent it

The third option is doing the harder version properly: use the surfactant chemistry that releases the oil, then neutralise with an acid rinse and extract both back out. Ask whether the rinse happens and what pH the carpet is left at.
