What is actually happening

Each carpet fiber is manufactured with a heat-set twist. Protector bonds around it and helps hold that twist. Sand grinding against the fiber creates microabrasions in the coating, and once enough coating is gone the twist releases. The visible result is a surface that looks fuzzy up close and dull from across the room.

How you prevent it

Slow, frequent vacuuming to remove sand, and reapplying protector annually before the coating thins out.

Blooming is when a carpet fiber’s twist unravels and the strand opens into a frayed, fuzzy state. It happens when the protector coating holding that twist closed has been abraded away, usually by embedded sand. Once fiber blooms it does not close again — the damage is permanent and no cleaning reverses it.
