Never use hot water and never scrub. Heat sets the tannin pigment and melts the fat deeper into the pile, and scrubbing spreads the ring wider while abrading the fibre tips.

The fat is the part a home remedy misses. It is not water-soluble, so blotting lifts the sugar and some pigment and leaves an oily residue behind, which then attracts soil and darkens over the following weeks. That needs solvent-side pre-treatment before extraction does anything at all.
