Never use a hot iron directly on carpet. Synthetic fibre melts and that damage is permanent. Never scrub — it drives the pigment past the face fibre into the backing and spreads the ring wider than the original mark.

Crayon is wax plus dye. The wax liquefies under heat and the dye behaves like a colourant on the fibre, so the two halves come out by different routes. Too much heat destroys the fibre; too little leaves residue that attracts soil and darkens over the following weeks.
